EPS-TOPIK Study Strategy: How to Split Your Time Between Listening and Reading
Facts checked: 2026-08-24
Start from how the test is scored
Listening and reading are worth exactly the same: 20 questions and 50 points each, 25 minutes each (source: epstopik.hrdkorea.or.kr, checked 2026-08-24). Because selection is by rank within a quota, every single point matters — a few listening points you ignored can be the gap between selected and not selected. Plan your study time close to 50:50 between the two skills, then adjust toward your weaker one after your first mock test.
A realistic 10–12 week plan
- Weeks 1–2: Hangul reading speed and survival vocabulary. If you still read syllable by syllable, reading 20 questions in 25 minutes is impossible
- Weeks 3–6: Work through the official Standard Textbook in unit order, doing the audio for every unit — the official site says all questions since 2013 come from this book (checked 2026-08-24)
- Weeks 7–9: Open question book (official free download) by section: signs and notices, workplace dialogues, safety vocabulary
- Weeks 10–12: Full timed mock tests in CBT/UBT style — 40 questions, 50 minutes, no pausing the audio
Listening habits that raise scores
- Play audio only once in practice. In the real test the recording does not repeat, so never train with replays
- Read the answer choices before the audio starts — that tells you what to listen for
- Learn numbers, prices, dates and times by sound; they are frequent and easy to lose
Reading habits that raise scores
- Train with a 75-second-per-question limit; skip and return rather than getting stuck
- Memorize sign and notice vocabulary (danger, no entry, working hours, safety gear) — these appear as picture and short-text items in the official testing module description (checked 2026-08-24)
- Learn grammar particles through example sentences from the textbook, not through grammar tables alone
One warning
Question-dump sites and "leaked questions" sellers are scams — since 2013 questions are developed confidentially from the standard textbook (source: epstopik.hrdkorea.or.kr, checked 2026-08-24). The official textbook, official question book and disciplined timed practice are the whole strategy.
